Sports massage, although very similar to therapeutic massage, also has its differences. It is similar in the fact that many of the techniques used by the therapist in sports massage are also used in therapeutic massage. However, the intentions and timing of the massage can play a crucial role in a sports massage session.
Why does timing matter?
There are 3 different times that most athletes seek massage.
- Pre-event/Inter-event: Prior to (between 30 minutes and 2 hours before starting) and during a sporting event, massage can be very beneficial in warming the muscle tissue to prepare you for whatever sport you'll be performing. These sessions are usually about 20-30 minutes long. During this time your therapist will use techniques that aren't necessarily relaxing, but very good for getting you ready to endure what's to come. Your therapist will work quickly using techniques such as friction, tapotement, stretching, compression/broadening, range of motion, and many others. Deep pressure is usually not recommended because you don't want to injure your muscles right before your race, competition, or game.
Please call us if you're interested in booking a therapist for your event!
- Post-event: After a sporting event (between 30 minutes and 24 hours, in some cases 48 hours) massage can be given to help calm your muscles and increase circulation. Post-event massages should be no more than 30 minutes long because of the extreme conditions your muscles just endured. During this massage, your therapist will use techniques more similar to therapeutic massage such as effleurage, petrissage, joint mobilization, compression/broadening, stretching, and more. As with pre-event massage, deep tissue must be avoided, however, it is okay to use deeper pressure than what you'd receive in a pre-event session. Post-event massage can be one of the most important aspects in your athletic lifestyle, if you have questions, please give us a call!
- Maintenance and Recovery: During your training program it is important to receive massage to keep the muscles in check. Also, if you have suffered from an injury, and are cleared to receive massage, it can be very beneficial in helping those pesky injuries recover faster and more efficiently. This massage is the most like therapeutic massage in the sense that it uses similar techniques. The duration will be determined based on your needs at that session.
Your choices for duration in a maintenance session include:
30 minutes - 45 minutes - 60 minutes - 90 minutes - 120 minutes

Keep in mind, 30 minutes and 45 minutes are for focus areas only.
